Absa Capital, through working closely with its clients to solution an appropriate delivery vehicle, identified the need for an exchange traded option contract. To this end they worked closely with the JSE to ensure these contracts were listed and tradable. “The JSE realises that in order to be more competitive it needs to offer foreign exchange products that are viable alternatives to those traded in the OTC space,” Geers said. Both new contracts can be triggered anytime by the event. When it comes to fees, both products operate on a competitive sliding scale and will be capped at R39 900 per deal to entice bigger contracts. OTC instruments are not traded on a stock exchange and are typically contracts between an investment bank and a client. “As market participants seek to avoid bilateral counter-party risk and with more regulation being imposed, our new products offer a regulated alternative and compete directly with OTC contracts.” Product innovation On-market instruments require no foreign exchange clearance and are settled in rands. 15 June 2011 The two new options are based on the dollar/rand exchange rate and are “knock-out barrier options up-and-out and down-and-out”. They offer asset manager and hedge fund participants an exchange-traded product similar to what has previously only been available over-the-counter (OTC). “The products will allow investors to create more diversified trading strategies using exchange traded products without taking on any credit risk,” the JSE’s general manager of derivatives trading, Warren Geers, said in a statement this week. These options represent the first currency “can-do” contracts offered by the JSE. Can-do options are a type of product first created by the JSE in June 2006 to offer investors the flexibility of an OTC product with the credibility and transparency of the listed derivative. They offer infinite variety to the professional investor. In a bid to offer currency traders even greater choice and flexibility, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and Absa Capital have listed the first “exotic-style” currency options contracts. Was sceptical at first, but after several uses it is making a difference. After having my hair bleached my hair was in poor condition, snapping and very frizzy. Now it’s alot calmer and doesn’t feel crunchy. Well ive used the shampoo which just a little lathers well, then a big pot of hair mask i wondered if id get an egg smell :-/ but no it smells gorgeous like a mix of honey&flowers slightly but more of sweet honey, it looks a bit like a gel type of cream , anyway after washing my hair i smothered some on and left it for ages and did my housework i wrapped hair up in plastic cap, now my hair has had fair bit of breakage from highlights and was very dry and porous/frizzy but this made my hair so smooth, i put my usual blow dry products in but had noticed how much tamer and smoother my hair was whilst drying and afterwards much better, i noticed its manufactured in u. And if its good enough for the arabic womens lovely hair its good enough for mine ;-). I’m happy for a good quality and fast delivery. Regular user of vatica productswas reasonable price. Anthony Aebi lost his appetite for conventional construction in 2006. Working on his own house, he was discouraged by the quality of the construction details he saw. He says that he realized that, in the grand scheme of things, the house probably wasn’t going to last that long.“I realized the conventional way we build houses, they’re temporary,” the upstate New York builder said recently by telephone. “They don’t have life spans over 60 years, pretty much. As I was building I could already see decomposition occurring and I thought I was going to quit building, because I didn’t want to build crap any more, or look into other ways of doing things.”His solution was to start building with insulated concrete forms (ICFs), which combine expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation with a core of reinforced concrete. His houses have triple-pane windows, spray polyurethane foam in the roof, ground-source heat pumps for heating and cooling, and rooftop photovoltaic arrays for power. They’re all designed for net-zero energy performance.Aebi’s construction company, Greenhill Contracting Inc., is working on or planning three net-zero subdivisions within a 20-mile radius of New Paltz, New York, some 80 miles north or New York City in the Hudson River Valley. Another two-house project in Esopus, New York, has been completed. When fully built out, the projects will have a total of 47 houses ranging in size from about 2,000 s.f. to 6,000 s.f. Bringing net-zero to production buildingThe largest of the company’s projects is Green Acres, a 25-unit subdivision where seven houses have been completed so far. The first was occupied in March 2009.Aebi’s current project is the nine-unit Mountain Vista subdivision, which he plans to complete before returning to Green Acres or the planned Scenic Meadows subdivision. All nine shells at Mountain Vista are up and windows installed.Mountain Vista is an attempt to lower the price of these net-zero houses by 20% to 30% when compared with a typical one-off custom house.“The idea is that we’re using production techniques to try to get the prices down,” he said. “By building nine at a time we’re getting the economies of scale. We’re sticking our necks out a little bit but the idea is what a production builder would typically do.”The houses average 2,400 s.f. in size and will sell in the “low to mid 400s,” according to Aebi. Once land, septic, infrastructure and other non-house expenses are backed out, he hopes to get construction costs down to $100 per s.f. or less. Hoping for a hand from WashingtonState and federal incentives help reduce the upfront cost of energy systems and heating and cooling in the houses that Aebi is building, but he also is banking on a new measure introduced in the U.S. Senate in June. The SAVE Act, introduced by Sen. Michael Bennett, a Colorado Democrat, would make it easier for borrowers to get credit for the energy-saving features built into the house. A lack of clear appraisal guidelines that allow realistic valuations for energy efficiency has been a frustration for many builders and homeowners.The measure has been referred to the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, but so far there’s been no further progress.How Greenhill’s projects ultimately do may depend on convincing buyers they’ll get a good deal even if the initial costs for net-zero construction are higher. And Aebi thinks the legislation is key. “If that bill passed it would make it completely foolhardy not to build or buy a non-zero energy house,” he said. ICFs, from footings to roofAlthough the houses vary in size and architectural design, they do have one thing in common: the exterior walls, “from the footers to the roof, including the gables,” are made of ICFs manufactured by Fox Blocks.A 6-inch core of concrete is sandwiched between two 2 5/8-inch layers of EPS insulation, giving the wall a total R-value of about 22, Aebi says. There are between 3 1/2 inches and 4 1/2 inches of closed-cell sprayed polyurethane under the slab, and R-60 worth of sprayed foam in the roof.Although the R-values of the exterior walls aren’t that high when compared with many net-zero or Passivhaus designs, air infiltration rates are very low.Aebi said three houses in a subdivision called The Preserve at Mountain Vista were just blower-door tested with leakage measured at 0.29, 0.28 and 0.34 air changes per house at 50 pascals of pressure (ach50). That’s about half the air leakage of the Passivhaus standard, 0.6 ach50.Abe’s houses also have Lifebreath heat-recovery ventilators, triple-glazed windows with U-factors of roughly 0.20, and, most recently, ground-source heat pumps manufactured by Water Furnace. The homes’ PV arrays are rated at 7 kW to 15 kW, depending on the size of the house.In all, Aebi says he has completed nine houses, seven of which have measured net-zero performance for at least one year.
Highlighting scripts is the first step in the long haul of turning the written word into a motion picture.A screenplay informs each department of its artistic, technical and logistical responsibilities. We start the process of wrapping our arms around a film by highlighting the script. I like highlighting because it calls for a fun trip to Staples, where I’ll stock up on new pens and all the other supplies needed during prep.Honestly, I only need one highlighter for the story points regarding the photography of the project. But, other colors do come in handy to cue visual effects, special camera movement, flashbacks, day or night, etc. I restrain myself from over-highlighting for the obvious reason that as I study the screenplay, I learn it and soon, highlighting ceases to become necessary.However — for the first two weeks of prep, I refer to my highlights constantly and from these, I build my list of questions and ideas for all of the meetings to come. Prep is for asking questions, resulting in answers, that will help you implement your highlighted issues.Let’s look at the opening scene of Ghostbusters II and then explore how various departments approached highlighting the script.Ghostbusters II is set in New York City. What we know at this point is that the exteriors will be shot on location and on back lots in Los Angeles. All options are open until the studio weighs in on the budget. Shooting in New York is crazy expensive, so the producers are trying to shunt as much of it as they can back to L.A. But at this point, let’s assume that the plan is to shoot New York for New York until told otherwise.Let’s start with the Location Manager. (We’ll use this script example again later for the DP, though for different reasons.)The Location Manager’s initial thoughts might be — “Hmm, East 77th Street, Upper East Side, notorious for their antipathy towards film shoots. We probably won’t be shooting there.”Ok, maybe, maybe not — but a location must be found with the well-heeled feel of Dana Barrett’s movie neighborhood. Can it be found elsewhere in New York? Sure. With snazzy set dressing, nicer cars and well-dressed extras, this illusion is easy to pull off and we do it every day. Because it’s the opening of the picture, the Location Manager will come up with lots of options in New York, but knowing full well that this scene could be picked up easily in Los Angeles.This next bit of business falls within the Transportation department’s domain and will generate lots of questions.“Does the hoisting occur on camera?” “Should we use a real tow truck company?” If so, “Are they teamsters?” “Do we repaint the vehicle with a fictitious name?” “What make of car is being hooked up and can it actually be lifted safely with a hook?” “How many other cars are on the street parked or moving?” “Limos, city buses?” And on and on…In the next example, casting concerns are highlighted in yellow, and prop concerns in orange.This is a fairly straightforward scene for the Prop Master. There are only a couple different kinds of baby buggies seen in New York and the most popular model, that big old-fashioned rig pushed by nannies in Central Park, will definitely be part of the showing. Grocery bags and keys are easy. In fact, the most time and resource consuming aspect of this scene will be propping up all of the extras on the sidewalk with umbrellas, briefcases, backpacks, newspapers, etc. No problems here.I was the ILM Director of Effects Photography on this project and, sadly, this scene offered nothing for me to highlight. The great Michael Chapman, ASC was the cinematographer on Ghostbusters II and I don’t know what he highlighted. But if I had been the DP, here’s what I would have highlighted — though not necessarily in this pink color:As the cinematographer, I would kindly ask for the set to be on the south or shady side of the street. This keeps hard light off of our leading lady and negates the need for big silks and solids. We can easily introduce light to add interest to the set or create back light for the actors.Because it is the opening of the movie, I would propose that we pick a location that allows us to start on a frame that says, “NEW YORK CITY” and boom down to reveal Dana in front of her apartment. Assuming the director agrees to the shot, a light study will be needed to determine what time of day would be best to shoot this “big” shot. I’ll get the Key Grip to put a crane on hold for this day. If we shoot this scene in LA, we’ll add the skyline in post.All the other departments not mentioned here will highlight this scene for their own good reasons. What would an Assistant Director highlight? Costumes, Grip and Electric, Catering? What would you do if you were in their place?
