(Eds: Recasting intro, adding information, editing throughout) Mumbai, Dec 20 (PTI) The world’s most popular professional basketball league, the NBA, Thursday announced it will bring two pre-season games to India next year, making it the first North American sports league to foray into the country. The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced that the Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings will play in two pre-season games in Mumbai on October 4 and 5 next year. The games will take place at the NSCI Dome in Worli, announced NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum and NBA India Managing Director Yannick Colaco here. “Our inaugural NBA India Games will help further untap the enormous basketball potential in a country with a thriving sports culture and a growing, young and engaged population,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a media release. “We thank the Kings and Pacers organisations for participating in this historic event,” he added. In addition to the games, the league and its partners would conduct interactive fan activities, junior NBA youth basketball programming and NBA Cares community outreachevents. The Kings, under the leadership of the NBA’s first Indian-born majority owner and Mumbai native Vivek Ranadive, currently features 2018 No. 2 overall draft pick Marvin Bagley III, 2017 No. 5 overall draft pick DeAaron Fox and 2016 No. 6 overall draft pick Buddy Hield (Bahamas). Draft picks are players who are eligible to compete in the NBA, selected by the competing teams. Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will take stock of the ongoing work on the Kartarpur corridor project at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district on Thursday, a state minister said on Wednesday. The Kartarpur corridor will connect Darbar Sahib — the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev — in Pakistan’s Kartarpur with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. It will facilitate visa-free movement of Indian pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib, which is located in Pakistan’s Narowal district across the Ravi river, about four kilometres from the Dera Baba Nanak shrine. The four-lane highway connecting the Zero Point of the Kartarpur corridor up to National Highway-354 is being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Besides, a passenger terminal is also under construction. New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday alleged that under the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh the issue of farmers interest was only limited to advertisements and billboards. Her scathing criticism came over a media report that a farmer’s son committed suicide in Saharanpur over alleged harassment by the electricity department and the police. “The issue of farmers interest under the Uttar Pradesh BJP (government) has been limited only to advertisements and billboards,” she said in a tweet in Hindi. “The farmers are not getting their dues. They do not get proper electricity supply, but their electricity bills have been hiked. They have been cheated in the name of the loan waiver. And they are also being insulted,” the Congress general secretary in-charge of eastern UP alleged.
NEW DELHI: Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday inaugurated the third edition of Mega Book Fair for the city government schools with 9,445 books put on display. Inaugurated at the School of Excellence, Rohini, the book fair which offers books for pre-primary, primary to senior secondary levels, will end on October 11.Speaking at the occasion, Sisodia said the representatives of all the 1,024 government schools of the Directorate of Education, have a responsible task of procuring the right books for their students. The lack of proper mechanism involved in the procurement of books across these 1,024 schools also resulted in more number of poor-quality books purchased through lobbying and favours,” the Education Minister said. So be careful.” The Delhi government has allocated Rs 9 crore for the libraries of all the government schools of Directorate of Education for the academic year 2019-20, out of which 50 percent will be reserved for classes IX to XII for subject reading, while the rest will go to books used for general reading. The Heads of Schools accompanied by the Library Purchase Committee will be visiting the fair and select their own basket of books.
