first_img1 Manchester United flop Bebe has admitted he initially thought it was a ‘joke’ when he heard the Premier League giants wanted to sign him.The Portuguese forward arrived at Old Trafford in 2010 in a notorious deal – the club reportedly paying Vitoria de Guimaraes £7million for the 20-year-old despite then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s admission that he’d never seen him play.He went on to make only seven appearances for the Red Devils, scoring twice, before – following a number of unsuccessful loan spells – leaving in 2014 for Benfica.Despite being considered one of the worst signings in the club’s history, though, Bebe insists he enjoyed the experience and that it was ‘insane’ to pull on the famous United shirt.“It all happened very quickly, a total surprise,” the 25-year-old, now on loan at Rayo Vallecano, said in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS.“One day I’m training and the next they’re telling me that I’m going to sign a five-year contract with Manchester United. I thought it was a joke. I wasn’t there long, but I enjoyed it.“It was insane. I was playing with the best in the world. It wasn’t easy, the first week I had to take a deep breath, but I got used to it. I adapted and tried to fit in.”He added: “I came there without much of a football education, just what I was born with: talent, speed, strength… but you needed more. If a big club signed me now it’d be different.”The forward has also raised some eyebrows after suggesting his game has similarities with that of United hero Cristiano Ronaldo.Being a Portuguese ex-United forward, the parallels between Bebe and global superstar Ronaldo would appear to end there. But when asked who his idol was, he said: “[Didier] Drogba, but also Cristiano because he’s Portuguese.“I have the same way of running, and the same shooting style, he’s definitely a favourite.” Former Manchester United forward Bebe last_img read more
